Plywood, mahogany veneer, basswood, epoxy resin, spar varnish, wood glue, brass, aluminum, copper, solder, enamel, vinyl, monofilament, string, nylon fabric, acrylic tank, water, water pump, pvc pipe, valves, filter, 62 x 50 x 22 inches (including base)

I was a finalist for a travel fellowship, my proposal was to build a sailboat and sail the North Atlantic coast to Canada when my visa expired. I wasn't successful but this project comes out of that one. The name comes from Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and one that I couldn't separate from my own estrangement on the most populated island in the world.

The tank measures 48 x 52 x 20 inches, within which a scaled representation of the compact sailboat from my proposal is consumed and submerged in 200 gallons of water but it is not adrift. Anchored at farthest mast to the base of the tank, the vehicle becomes an island in a larger context. Upturned and anchored, the boat is now an island, subsumed into a system greater than itself.
